About UEFA Europa League:
History
The UEFA Europa League (UEL), usually known simply as the Europa League, is an annual club football competition organised since 1971 by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for eligible European clubs. It is the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the UEFA Champions League and above the UEFA Conference League.
Introduced in 1971 as the UEFA Cup, it replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The Uefa Cup Winners' Cup was the second-tier of European club competition organised by UEFA while Uefa Cup was the third-tier.[1] Until 1998 the winner of the Uefa Cup Winners' Cup progressed to play the winner of the European Cup (later the UEFA Champions League) in the European Super Cup.[2] The Uefa Cup Winners' Cup competition was absorbed by Uefa Cup since 1998-1999 season.[3] A group stage was added ahead of the knockout phase in 2004–05 season. The competition took its current name in 2009,[4][5] following a format change[6] that included a merger with the UEFA Intertoto Cup, expanding the group stage and altering qualification. In 2024–25, the group stage was replaced by a 36-team league phase.
Winners of the UEFA Europa League qualify for the following season's UEFA Super Cup and UEFA Champions League. They have also occasionally played matches against the winners of the CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana in the UEFA–CONMEBOL Club Challenge, most recently in 2023.
Spanish clubs have the highest number of victories (14 wins), followed by England and Italy (10 wins each). The most successful club in the competition is Sevilla, with seven titles. Tottenham Hotspur are the current holders, having beaten Manchester United 1–0 in the 2025 final.
